The Gingerbread City 2024

December 2024

Henley Halebrown and Ridge & Partners have partnered up to create 'The Ginger Shack' for The Gingerbread City 2024, organised by the Museum of Architecture.

The organisers hope that this year's theme of Adaptive Reuse will "inspire conversations about cities and how we live in them".

There has been much talk about the circular economy, with the aim of reappropriating waste back into construction. How can we look at our cities as material stores for the future and give materials a resource passport?

For our project, the existing materials gathered have been altered, refinished or resized, but not reprocessed. Second hand sweets have been gathered and existing gingerbread kits sources to construct a stack of gingerbread cottages.

The apparent minimalism of the real world is counteracted with colourful sweets, formerly for Hallowe'en, now adapted and reused as Christmas decorations.
