Dialogues 27 - William Mann
May 2025
On Wednesday 28 May, Henley Halebrown will host Dialogues 27 with William Mann on 'Hans Döllgast: Rationalism in Disoriented Times'.
In the immediate post-war period, Hans Döllgast (1891-1974) transformed the ruins of a series of emblematic public buildings in Munich - inserting economical structures of raw brick, slender steel and filigree wood in full contact with the broken remains. These projects sit within a rich and varied body of work that combines rationalism with adjustment to the found, and ranges in scale from urbanism to interiors. In this talk, William will share work in progress interpreting this engaging and elusive architect.
William Mann is a director of Witherford Watson Mann Architects. The studio's work focuses on the physical continuity of buildings, and the social evolution of cities and institutions. Their projects of transformation include a house within the ruins of Astley Castle, for which they won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2013. William has written for a range of publications on transformations of the city, and on the friction of time in the building process, including most recently the essay 'The Slip Twixt Cup and Lip', published in Casabella 943.
The talk will also be live streamed on Henley Halebrown's YouTube channel.
