Dialogues 26 - Alexey Ginzburg

April 2025

On Tuesday 29 April, Henley Halebrown will host Dialogues 26 with Alexey Ginzburg on 'Narkomfin and the Family Architectural Tradition'.

In this talk, Alexey will share his perspectives on the conservation of the Narkomfin residential building and the restoration methodology that his practice has developed for listed buildings of the Russian avant-garde. He will also discuss the family architectural tradition and provide examples of their work within Moscow’s ambiguous urban culture.

Alexey Ginzburg was born into a family of architects in Moscow, continuing a legacy as a fourth-generation architect. He graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute (MArchI) in 1993 and completed his PhD at RMIT in 2024. He is a member of the Union of Architects of Russia and the Union of Conservation Architects of Russia, and a former professor at MArchI. From 1995 to 2022, he was one of the leading architects at Ginzburg Architects, before focusing on various architectural research projects and publications.

With extensive experience of working in historic cities, Ginzburg Architects has developed restoration and adaptive reuse projects for both avant-garde architectural monuments – including the Narkomfin Building, Izvestia Building and Pravda Complex – and other listed historic buildings. The studio operates as a heritage conservation practice alongside designing contemporary architecture. The practice has been a finalist in several major urban design competitions, including Big Moscow (2010), the Moscow Quarters Renovation (2018) and the Derbent Masterplan (2020).

The talk will also be live streamed on Henley Halebrown's YouTube channel.
